Frequently asked questions
Clear answers about UK document legalisation
Find plain-English guidance on Hague apostilles, consular legalisation, original documents and certified copies, and processing timelines.
Document types
Which requirement applies to my document?
Hague apostilles are issued for documents used in countries that are party to the Hague Convention. Destinations outside the Convention usually need consular legalisation instead. We confirm the route once we know your destination.
Originals and copies
Can I send originals or certified copies?
Many UK public documents can be submitted as originals, while some must first be certified copies. Check the Documents page for your document type, and we will advise if your item needs a different route.
Timelines
How long does processing take?
Processing times depend on the document, the destination and the service option you choose. We explain the statutory processing schedule and the turnaround options available, but we cannot guarantee a fixed date.
