Italy is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so a UK public document only needs an apostille to be accepted there. Italian embassy legalisation is not required.
Is an apostille enough for Italy?
The apostille confirms that the UK signature, seal or stamp is genuine, but it does not translate the document. Italian authorities usually want a translation into Italian, and some bodies ask for it to be certified or sworn. Check with the office that will receive your document.

If you need a UK degree or other qualification recognised in Italy, Italian consulates in the UK usually ask for a UK notary to verify the qualification with the awarding body and certify a copy, and for that notarised copy to be apostilled. See our guide to degree certificates for the steps.
