Apostille for Spain: Using UK Documents in Spain

Spain is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. That means a UK public document only needs an apostille to be accepted there, and no Spanish embassy legalisation is required.

Is an apostille enough for Spain?

For most purposes, yes. The apostille confirms that the UK signature, seal or stamp is genuine. It does not translate the document. Spanish authorities usually ask for a Spanish translation, and often one made by a sworn translator (traductor jurado).

Ask the receiving office what it accepts before you pay for a translation, and whether it wants the translation done before or after the apostille.

Common reasons people need one

  • Residency and NIE applications
  • Buying or selling property
  • Getting married in Spain
  • Enrolling in a Spanish school or university
  • Employment and professional recognition
  • Inheritance and family matters

What we need from you

  • Your original document, or a certified copy where that is allowed
  • The country it will be used in (Spain) and what it is for
  • Any certification already done, such as a solicitor or notary certifying a copy

Cost and timing

Our apostille price is £100 per document. This includes the FCDO fee and tracked return, and we aim to finish within 2 working days of your documents arriving at our office.

Translation is not included and is quoted separately if you need it.

Before you order

Some Spanish offices only accept recently issued certificates, so ask about the maximum age of the document. If you are unsure whether you need the original or a certified copy, send us a message and we will advise.
