Since 7 November 2023, the Apostille Convention has applied between the UK and mainland China. A UK document with an apostille can be used in mainland China without consular legalisation.
What changed
The Chinese Embassy and consulates in the UK stopped providing consular legalisation from that date. For UK documents going to mainland China, the apostille from the UK Legalisation Office is now the step you need. The Convention also applies to Hong Kong and Macao.
Is an apostille enough?
The apostille confirms that the UK signature, seal or stamp is genuine. Chinese authorities usually ask for a translation into Chinese as well, and often a certified one. Check with the receiving authority what it needs.
Common reasons people need one
- Work permits and visas, which often need degrees and police certificates
- Study and university applications
- Marriage and family matters
- Business registration and contracts
What we need from you
- Your original document, or a certified copy where that is allowed
- What it is for, so we can confirm the right route
- Any solicitor or notary certification already done
Cost and timing
Our apostille price is £100 per document. This includes the FCDO fee and tracked return, and we aim to finish within 2 working days of your documents arriving at our office.
Certification and translation are quoted separately if you need them.
